NewFilmakers New York is a weekly film and video screening series hosted by the Anthology Film Archives in New York City. The series mostly screens on Tuesdays or Wednesday but tends to fluctuate depending on Anthology’s programming. NewFilmmakers screens a wide range of films including animation, documentaries, shorts, and features. Many are films and videos overlooked by traditional film festivals.
HISTORY
The NewFilmmakers Series began in 1998 by NYU film students in order to show their work and
promote themselves in the New York film community. Then, and now, most festivals and screening programs
in the city only screened known and established filmmakers or films with movie stars involved. There aren’t a lot of film festivals that screen new or largely unknown filmmakers.
Without sacrificing their original mission, NewFilmmakers has grown into a recognized international screening series and over the past fourteen years has screened over 600 features and 2,000 shorts.
SUBMISSIONS
Filmmakers are urged to submit their work to NewFilmmakers New York through WithoutABox or in person by visiting the series at the Anthology Film Archives. It is interesting to note that all film submissions are rolled over from season to season until an appropriate program is found for a specific project.
FILMMAKER PROFILES
NewFilmmakers New York was the first organization to utilize Film Anthropology’s Filmmaker Profiles video series, which has since been adopted by other festivals. While they now have other sponsors for their filmmaker interviews, we continue to support the mission of NewFilmmakers New York and their selected filmmakers.
